Hi everybody - we’re going to be closing the Mouse-ALM-10 challenge at 5pm Pacific time, on Monday (that’s today), April 3. It will be replaced by Mouse-ALM-12.

We have two new challenges, straight from the visual cortex.

Neither of these have gold standards to compare with, so that’s an extra layer of excitement. Have fun!

Today, we would like to share a fresh batch of feedback from scientist alexh at the Allen Institute for Brain Science. Feel free to follow up with any questions you may have in our forums.

Scientist notes on 03: Mouse Neuron V1 is our oldest available feedback.

For those new to the feedback series, the "gold standard" label is given to things that have already been currently reconstructed by experts (either elsewhere or at the Allen Institute for Brain Science) that we use to evaluate against to measure the effectiveness of our tools and help identify areas that could use more education efforts.
In all the images for this post, the gold standard is in red (axon) and blue (dendrites), while the consensus is green.

Mouse-V1-16
Estimated Percent Complete: 82%
This consensus is excellent. All the dendrites were captured accurately, and most of the axon was captured accurately with almost zero false positive. The missed axon was generally the faintest axon tips.

Mouse-V1-17
Estimated Percent Complete: 84%
This is also a very good reconstruction. Some short length of dendrite was missed, which is unusual. The axon that was missed was mostly deep in the slice, and because of that, quite difficult to see. There is a little false positive around the soma, but it would be easily deleted.

Human-01
Estimated Percent Complete: 79%
Another excellent reconstruction! All the dendrites were accurate, except for two missed tips. The missed axon was mostly faint.

Mouse-ALM-03
Estimated Percent Complete: 140%
Our gold standard is a dendrite-only, so we cannot compare the axon. Only one dendrite tip was missed. The axon looks quite good, except for that cluster of false positive at the top.

Mouse-ALM-05
Estimated Percent Complete: 136%
Our gold standard is dendrite-only for this cell. The dendrites look great! There are only a couple of tiny false-negatives. The axon that was captured in the consensus looks pretty continuous. The scattered false positive would be easily deleted if this were used as a starting point by us.

Great job, community!

Our scientists have let us know that they’re ready to evaluate challenges ALM-11 and V1-19. Great job, everyone - we’ll be taking those down tomorrow around 5pm Pacific time, and replacing them with fresh challenges.
