New Feedback from Our Neighborhood Neuroscientist
Posted on Apr 25, 2017 UTC by smortier

Here is the latest round of feedback from our friendly, neighborhood neuroscientist ‘alexh’. On V1-19 you guys helped reconstruct the axon, an area the previous gold standard hadn’t touched. Nicely done! There are also some areas for improvement, so keep reading to hear what ‘alexh’ had to say about each reconstruction:

V1-18

Gold Standard: 78983px

Consensus: 41360px (52%)

I must have pulled this one too soon. There is a lot of axon that had yet to be captured, and from past experience, I think more of it could have been capture if I had directed with more comments. On the plus side, this consensus would have been a great starting point for us because it has almost zero false positive signal. Please note that the MIP (maximum intensity projection) does not show much axon because the signal-to-noise ratio is too low. This is an example of one of the harder axons to reconstruct for us, so it is not surprising that it was challenging.

V1-19

Gold Standard: 27202px

Consensus: 45343px (166%)

In this case, our gold standard was dendrite-only, and the dendrite portion of the consensus is perfect. The axon that the players traced looks very good, and we may end up using it to add the axon to our existing reconstruction! Thanks, players! Well done!

Human-02

Gold Standard: 24661px

Consensus: 54694px (220%)

In this case, the players traced the neuron nearly perfectly, missing only one dendrite tip, but then continued to trace a lot of false positive signal present in the image. One factor that contributed is that this human tissue has a different appearance than the mouse tissue that the players are used to tracing. In this case, the quality that would indicate that the signal is false is that it is very thick, very diffuse and does not connect to the main structure. I?m guessing that much of the false signal is vasculature in this case.

All in all, you've got a lot to be proud of, players! Keep up the exceptional work and we'll let you know when the next round of feedback comes rolling in.
