Sometimes it can be tricky to tell the difference between actual neuron signal and random artifacts from the capturing process. A general rule of thumb is: if what you are seeing has a consistent trajectory, it is likely actual neuron and should be traced. If, however, you see random ‘dots in space’ this is probably not neuronal signal and can be ignored.
